White Gallnut is a semi-evergreen tree, up to 12 m
tall; bark greyish, branchlets hairless, greyish, round. Leaves are
thick. leathery, opposite, 8.5-10 x 6-8 cm, hairless, glaucous,
blackish when dry, base rounded, margin entire, tip blunt or notched,
secondary nerves 6-9 pairs, leaf-stalk 1 cm, pale orange. Flowers are
pale yellow in simple branch-end spikes, carried on
flower-cluster-stalk up to 8 cm long. Bracts are lanceshaped, up to 3
mm long. Sepal-tube is 2.5 x 1 mm, expanded portion cup-shaped, 2x3 mm,
teeth triangular or triangular, about 1 mm long, somewhat tapering.
Stamens are 10 in 2 series, filaments up to 3 mm long, anthers 0.8 mm.
Ovary is 2.8 mm, style 3 mm, 1-2-ovuled. Fruit is 2.5-4 x 1.3-1.7 cm,
glossy, very faintly ridged when dry. White Gallnut is found in South
India. Flowering: March-April.
Medicinal uses: White Gallnut fruits are
widely used in the treatment of various maladies such as diarrhea,
ulcers, venereal diseases.
